TIL in 1901 a wealthy Parisian woman established an "X Prize" of 100,000 francs for the first person to make contact with aliens. Contact with Martians didn't count — as everybody already knew there was life on Mars. The prize was eventually awarded to the Apollo 11 astronauts in 1969.
