TIL that Dennis Muren, the special effects artist who worked on Star Wars and Close Encounters, took a year-long sabbatical to read a 1,200-page textbook on computer graphics. Shortly thereafter, he led the VFX teams that worked on Terminator 2, then Jurassic Park.
