Tibetans have lived for thousands of years at low-oxygen (hypoxic) altitudes. They have mutations in two genes, PHD2 and HIF2A, important to hypoxia response pathway. Researchers demonstrate PHD2 promotes increased breathing in response to hypoxia, while HIF2A accounts for decreased BP in lungs.
